This sweet little flower coaster has lots of petals that make it ruffle. You can block it if you want it flat, but I think it looks so cute ruffled up around a teacup or teapot.  😊

Skill Level:  Easy

Materials:

Cotton yarn – 1 skein (you can probably get at least two coasters from one skein but it depends on the brand you choose.)

Hook size:  H/8 – 5.00 mm

Stitch markers

Gauge:

Gauge is not important for this pattern.

Dimensions:

Approximately 5 1/2” from end to end

Abbreviations:
Chain – ch
Single Crochet – sc
Double Crochet – dc
Slip stitch – ss
Stitch – st
Skip – sk

Notes:

  1. Beginning chains count as stitches.
  2. I prefer a magic circle to start so there’s no hole in the middle.  However, if you’d like, you can chain 2 and work 5 sc into the second chain from hook for Round 1.
  3. Do build-up chains loosely to make it easier to get your hook through for the slip stitch at the end of each round.
  4. I  recommend putting a stitch marker in the top of your build-up chain, it makes it much easier to find where to place your slip stitches.

Instructions:

Make a magic circle. (Or use optional instructions in Notes.)

Round 1:  Sc five times into the magic circle.  Join with a ss. (The ss counts as a st here so total stitches are 6)

Round 2:  Ch 1, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st and in each st around.  Join with ss. (12 sts)

See where the blue arrow is pointing in the photo below for sc placement. (Be careful not to use the stitch at the base of your chain or you will end up with too many stitches).

Round 3:  Ch 2, 2 dc in next st and in each stitch around. (The extra ch 2 at the beginning is to fill the gap and help with the ruffling.)  Join at the top of the first dc with ss. (25 sts) See photo below for slip stitch placement.

Round 4:  Ch 2, 2 dc in next stitch, ch 1, sk 1, *3 dc in next st, ch 1, sk 1*.  Repeat from * to * ten times.  Join in first chain with ss. (12 clusters)

See blue arrow in photo below for ss placement.

Round 5:  Ch 1, 5 dc in next stitch, sc, sk 1, *sc, 5 dc in next stitch, sc, sk 1*.  Repeat from * to * ten times.  Slip stitch into first chain and bind off. (12 petals).

See blue arrow for first dc placement in Round 5.
