This hat is a very basic pattern. I designed it for Lion Brand’s #hatnothate campaign which is helping to bring awareness to the impact bullying has on children and teens. It uses simple stitches, but they alternate in a way that gives it a little extra design. It’s nice and slouchy and fits a little snugly at the brim so it won’t slide off. I’d say it’s at the “advanced beginner” level. Laid flat, it measures 10” across at the brim, and 8” from top to bottom.
Materials:
Crochet hook size J/6.0 mm
Lion Brand Jeans Yarn in Brand New – 1 skein
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Dc – double crochet
Dc2tog – double crochet 2 together
Hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together
Ss – slip stitch
Sp – space
St, sts – stitch, stitches
Special stitches:
dc2tog – double crochet 2 together to create 1 decrease: Start to dc in stitch but don’t pull through the last two loops. Yarn over. Place in in next stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops – there will be 3 loops on hook. Yarn over. Pull through all 3 loops to complete the decrease.
hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together to create 1 decrease: yarn over, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook). Yarn over, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all 4 loops.
Notes:
1. Chain 2 counts as dc throughout.
2. When you get to round 15, you can start trying on the hat and decide if you want to adjust the snugness of the brim. To make it less snug, just ignore the decreases in one or more rows, to make it tighter, add in one more row of decreases.
Instructions:
Start with a magic ring.
Round 1: sc six times into magic ring, ss to join.
Round 2: ch 2, dc at base of chain, ch 1, *2 dc in next st, ch 1*, continue from * to * around. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. You should have 14 dc.
Round 3: ch 2, dc at base of chain, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in space between next dc cluster, ch 1*, continue from * to * around. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. You should have 28 dc.
Round 4: ch 2, 2 dc in next ch 1 sp, *1 dc in next sp, 2 dc in next ch 1 sp*, continue from * to * around. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 42 sts.
Round 5: ch 2, 1 dc at base of ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts*, continue from * to * around. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 56 sts.
Round 6: ch 2, dc at base of ch, 1 dc at base of ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 spaces, *2 dc in next sp, 1 dc in each of next 3 spaces*, continue from * to * around. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 70 sts.
Round 7: ch 2, dc in next 5 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts*, continue around from * to *. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 83 sts.
Round 8: ch 2, dc in next 6 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 6 sts*, continue around from * to *. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 95 sts.
Round 9: ch 2, dc in each st around, slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 96 sts.
Round 10: ch 2, *dc in each of next 6 sts, dc2tog*, continue from * to * around. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 85 sts.
Round 11: ch 2, *dc in each of next 5 sts, dc2tog*, continue from * to * around. 1 dc in last st. Slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 74 sts.
Round 12: Turn, ch 2, dc around, slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 74 sts.
Round 13: Turn, ch 2, hdc around, slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 74 sts.
Round 14: Turn, ch 2, hdc around, slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 74 sts.
Round 15: Turn, ch 2, hdc in each of next 5 sts, 1 hdc2tog in next st, *hdc in each of next 6 sts, 1 hdc2tog in next st*. Repeat across row. 1 hdc in each of last 2 sts. 65 sts.
Round 16: Turn, ch 2, hdc in each of next 4 sts, 1 hdc2tog in next st, *hdc in each of next 5 sts, 1 hdc2tog in next st*. Repeat from * to * across row. 1 hdc in each of last st. 55 sts.
Round 17: Turn, ch 2, hdc around, slip stitch to join at top of first ch 2. 55 sts.
Round 18: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st around, ss to join in first ch. 55 sts.
Round 19: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st around, ss to join in first ch. 55 sts.
Round 20: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st around, ss to join in first ch. 55 sts. Tie off and weave in ends.
