These are trying times we’re living in. I wanted to do my small part to help so I decided to try and come up with an easy-to-crochet face mask. I wanted it to be easy enough so that even a beginner could do it, and I also wanted it to be light and breathable. These are obviously not meant to be medical grade, merely to protect others if you sneeze or cough.
I created two different face mask designs – one a little more feminine than the other. I made them with an open weave so they wouldn’t be too warm, and I created a pocket so you can insert whatever fabric or filter you want. The patterns are super simple and done all in one piece. The ties are crocheted right onto the body of the masks. I left the sides open, but you can always sew those up if you choose to. I used Lion Brand Beautiful You yarn in Glacier Gray because it’s very light and goes right into the washer and dryer, but feel free to use whatever yarn you like.
My hope is that you are all staying safe and healthy. My prayer is that this will end soon and we will come out of it stronger and wiser. Blessings to you all, my friends. 🙏🏻💕
This pattern is offered here free as always. If you’d like an ad-free, easily printable version of the pattern, you can help support my small business and purchase it for a small fee in my Etsy shop – SimpleThings byTia, or in my Ravelry Store – Simple Things Crochet. *Note – At this point, Ravelry is not accepting patterns for face masks so this particular pattern is not in my Ravelry Store. If you’d like to purchase it, you’ll need to do it through Etsy.
If you’d like to receive an email whenever there’s a new post, you can find the sign-up box in the sidebar (or below if you’re on mobile). I never sell your info or use it for anything else.
I’ve included lots of photos with these patterns. I’ve tried to place them appropriately, but it’s always best to read through the pattern first and then use the photos as additional guidance.
Skill Level: Easy
Materials:
Lion Brand Beautiful You in Glacier Gray – 1 skein (for two masks)
Hook size F/5 – 3.75 mm
Stitch markers are highly recommended for this project
Gauge:
4 clusters and 8 rows = 4” for Granny Stitch Mask
14 dc and 8 rows = 4” for Double Crochet Mask
When I think of it, I’ve been trying to include the length of my starting chain. I feel it’s a quick and easy indicator to see if you’re on track with the gauge.
Dimensions:
6” wide by 5” long – Granny Stitch Mask
6 3/4” by 5” – Double Crochet Mask
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Dc – double crochet
Sk – skip
Sp – space
St, sts – stitch, stitches
Notes:
- Beginning chains don’t count as stitches.
- The straps are crocheted right onto the body of the mask. It’s important to mark your stitches at the end of the rows before you start the chains for the ties. That way you’ll know where to continue with your rows when you finish with the ties.
- Be careful not to let your chains twist when you are crocheting across for the straps.
- You just fold the mask up to form the pocket which will hold whatever fabric or filter you choose to use. You can also sew up the sides if you like.
- I’m including instructions for both masks.
