This pattern combines a traditional granny square with a solid granny square which is one of my favorite things to do. It’s a simple design that produces beautiful results – my favorite kind of pattern! Done in classic fall colors, this table cover will set the stage for autumn decor in your home. Add in the leaf coasters, and you’re all set!

Autumn Table Cover Pattern
Notes:
- Beginning chains count as stitches.
- I like to start with a magic circle so there’s no hole in the middle, but alternatively you can: ch 3, 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, *ch 2, 3 dc in same ch*, repeat from * to * two more times, ch 2, join at top of first ch with ss.
- I’ve included the number of stitches in the solid dc stitch rows. You need to make sure you have the correct number of stitches or your granny stitch rows will not come out right.
- You have the option of not cutting your yarn between rows that use the same color and just doing a build up chain. It’s definitely the easier option, but it makes the build-up chain more obvious so the choice is yours.
Instructions:
With Ecru, make a magic circle (or use optional instructions in Notes)
Round 1: Ch 3 into circle, 2 dc, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 2) three times, join at top of starting ch with ss, cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 2: Attach yarn at any corner, ch 3, 2 dc in corner ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * two more times, join at top of starting ch with ss, cut yarn and fasten off.
Rounds 3 – 4: Attach Cafe au Lait at any corner, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * two more times, join at top of starting ch with ss, cut yarn and fasten off.

Round 14: Attach Ecru at any corner, ch 3, (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner sp, do 1 dc in each dc st across row, and do (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each remaining corner, join at top of starting ch with ss, cut yarn and fasten off. 55 sts.

Round 23: Attach Cafe au Lait at any corner, follow pattern from Round 13.
Round 24: Attach Cafe au Lait at any corner, follow pattern from Round 14. Fasten off and weave in ends.
For the tassels:
Cut 22 strands of Cafe au Lait yarn that are 8” in length. (See tip below for cutting the strands quickly and easily.). Line up 20 strands evenly and tie one strand very tightly around the middle and knot it. Use the ends of that strand to tie it to one corner of the table cover. Gather all the strands together and use the last strand to tie around the top about 1/2” from the corner – knot it tightly. Trim ends evenly. See photos for clarification.
Tip: I find the fastest way to cut my yarn strands to the right length is to wrap them around something (here I used my hook case, but I’ve used books in the past) and then just snip through all the strands at once.
Autumn Leaf Coaster Pattern
Materials:
Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn in Café au Lait
Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn in Ecru
Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn in Goldenrod
Hook size: H/8 – 5.00mm for small coasters
Hook size: I/9 – 5.50mm for large coasters/small trivets
Stitch markers are optional but recommended
Gauge:
3 dc and 2 beginning rows = 1”
Dimensions:
Leaf coaster: 5” wide x 6” long
Small trivet: 6” wide x 7” long
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Dc – double crochet
Tc – treble crochet
St, sts – stitch, stitches
Sp – space
Ss – slip stitch
Notes:
- Beginning chains count as stitches. Especially in Round 5, remember that the chain 1 from Round 4 counts as a sc.
- I prefer a magic circle to start so there’s no hole in the middle. However, if you’d like, you can chain 2 and work 8 sc into the second chain from hook for Round 1.
- Do build-up chains loosely to make it easier to get your hook through for the slip stitch at the end of each round.
- I recommend putting a stitch marker in the top of your build-up chain, it makes it much easier to find where to place your slip stitches.
- You will be making a picot at the top of some of the crochet stitches. This is simply a chain that you slip stitch into to make a small loop.
- These need to be blocked to lay flat.
- Instructions are the same for the large coasters/small trivets except you hold two strands of yarn together. I used a combination of Cafe au Lait and Ecru, Cafe au Lait and Goldenrod, and Goldenrod and Ecru for the large coasters. I think these are thick enough to use as small trivets, also.

Round 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st (not in first st as before), sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat from * to * four times, sc in each of last 2 sts, ss to join. (39 sts)
Round 5: No build-up as before, sk next 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc, ss in next sc, *sk next 2 sc, 4 dc in next sc, on 4th dc, ch 3, then ss in 3rd ch from hook (picot made), dc in same st, (5 total dc in this cluster), sk next 2 sc, ss in next sc*. Repeat from * to * one more time. (2 dc, tr) in next sc, on tr ch 4, ss in 4th ch from hook (picot made), (tr, 2dc) in next sc, ss in next sc. *Sk next 2 sc, 2 dc in next sc, on 2nd dc, ch 3, then ss in 3rd ch from hook (picot made), 3 dc in same st, (5 total dc in this cluster), sk next 2 sc, ss in next sc* Repeat from * to * one more time. September 7, 2022 3:45 amI’ve crocheted for 50 years but I found this pattern to be VERY DIFFICULT.
Once I got to the rows of solid granny squares, the “square” became much wider because of the stitches in every stitch. I had to take it all out and continue with an “open” granny square.
It still looks good but I couldn’t imagine that blocking would take care of such a huge difference. It looked more like a ruffle.

September 7, 2022 10:46 amI’m sorry the pattern didn’t work out for you, Robin. It’s one of my most popular patterns and I’ve had nothing but positive comments. I can’t imagine what the issue was but I know how frustrating it can be when a pattern doesn’t work out. I’m glad you were happy with the final product, but again, I apologize for your trouble.
Sincerely,
Tia
