I wanted to make this hat a little lacy looking, and I was really happy with how it turned out. It’s obviously not meant for warmth but just as a pretty fashion accent for the warmer months. The pompom is optional – I just tied it on so it could be easily removed. If you’d like to add it, you can find tons of tutorials online. You’ll have enough yarn left over from the one skein needed for the hat to make the pompom. Plus, you can turn the brim up so the hat looks more like a beanie. The pattern may look a little complicated, but once you get started, it’s a lot of repeat so it’s pretty easy. Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
ss – slip stitch

Notes:
1. Chain 1 counts as sc and chain 2 counts as dc throughout.
2. 5 dc in single stitch creates shell stitch.
Instructions:
Start with a magic ring.
Round 1: sc eight times into magic ring, ss to join.
Round 2: ch 1, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in each st around. Slip stitch to join. See photos below. You should have 16 sts.
Round 3: ch 1, sk 1, *5 dc in next st, sk 1, sc, sk 1*,repeat from * to * two more times, 5 dc, sk 1. Slip stitch to join in beginning ch 1 (see photo below).
Round 4: ch 2, 2 dc at base of beginning ch 2, ch 2, 1 sc in middle of next shell, ch 2, *5 dc in next sc, ch 2, 1 sc in middle of next shell, ch 2*. Repeat from * to * two more times. Then 2 dc at base of beginning ch 2. Slip stitch to join at top of beginning ch 2 to create a full shell. See photos below.
Round 5: ch 2, *dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, 5 dc in next sc, ch 1, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, sc in middle of next shell, ch 1* Repeat from * to * two more times. dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, 5 dc in next sc, ch 1, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1. Slip stitch to join at base of beginning ch 2. See photos below.
Round 6: ch 2, 2 dc at base of ch, ch 2, *2 dc in next dc (see photo below), ch 2, sc in middle of next shell, ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2 , 5 dc in next sc, ch 2 * Repeat from * to * two more times. 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, sc in middle of next shell, ch 2, 2 dc in next dc. Then 2 dc at base of beginning ch 2, Slip stitch to join at top of beginning ch 2.
Round 7: Turn, ch 3 , * 3 dc in middle of next 2dc cluster, ch 2, 5 dc in next sc, ch 2, 3 dc in middle of next 2dc cluster, ch 2, sc in middle of next shell, ch 2*.
