The granny stitch is one of my all-time favorites. It’s amazing to me how it can look so elegant. I wanted a simple shawl in neutral colors when I started this design. As it progressed, I was surprised at how classy it looked! I love how that happens with crochet. You just never know where it will take you. This is a classic granny shawl pattern that works up very quickly, and it’s super relaxing to crochet. It’s a large shawl (65”x34”) so you have plenty of coziness to wrap up in. Enjoy!

Materials:
Red Heart Soft Essentials in Charcoal – 3 skeins
Red Heart Soft Essentials in Biscuit – 2 skeins
Hook size K/10.5 – 6.5mm
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Sp – space
St, sts – stitch, stitches
Gauge:
4 granny stitch clusters and 3 sc rows = 4”
Notes:
1. I use a magic circle to begin the shawl. There are tons of tutorials online for it. If you prefer, you can ch 4 and slip stitch to join the ends of the circle. Then just work row 1 into the circle. Be aware that you will have a hole right at the top with this method.
2. Turning chains count as dc throughout.
Dimensions:
65” wide from tip to tip
34” from top neck edge to bottom point
Color Pattern:
Rows 1 – 5: Charcoal
Rows 6 – 7: Biscuit
Rows 8 – 23: Charcoal
Rows 24 – 26: Biscuit
Rows 27 – 28: Charcoal
Rows 29 – 32: Biscuit
Instructions:
With Charcoal, make a magic circle to start. Follow color pattern for color changes.
Row 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in circle, ch 2, 3 dc. Tighten magic circle to close hole.
Row 2: Turn, ch 3, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3dc) in middle of ch 2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in last st (see this post for a couple of instructional photos).
Row 3: Turn, ch 3, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp at top of row, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in last st.
Rows 4 – 32: Repeat the pattern in row 3, doing 3 dc in every ch 1 sp, and (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) at the top of each row in the ch 2 sp.
Tie off and weave in ends.
